Recently, I had the pleasure of hosting a brilliant organisation’s awards evening in Edinburgh - an event that perfectly balanced professionalism with pure fun.
The brief from the client was clear from the start: they didn’t want the evening to feel like “just another awards ceremony”. They wanted energy in the room, genuine audience interaction, and an event people would still be talking about the next day.
So alongside presenting the awards and keeping the evening flowing smoothly, I helped to build a live gameshow element into the night to keep the atmosphere lively between presentations.
The result was exactly what every organisation hopes for from an event: a packed room full of laughter, cheering, competitiveness, and people genuinely enjoying themselves rather than simply sitting politely waiting for the next “thing”.
An Event That Actually Felt Fun
One of the biggest challenges with awards nights is keeping momentum high throughout the evening.
That’s where having the right event host makes a huge difference.
Rather than allowing the energy to dip between awards, we used interactive gameshow segments to keep guests engaged and involved throughout the night. Teams got competitive, turned against each other for prizes, and the room quickly shifted from formal event to full-on entertainment experience.
And then came the highlight of the night…
The “Serial Ghoster” Award That Nobody Collected
Among the genuine awards was a few intentionally humorous categories. One that stood out particularly: The Serial Ghoster.
When the winner was announced, everyone waited for somebody to walk up and collect it.
Nobody moved.
The room burst out laughing as it slowly dawned on everyone that the winner hadn’t shown up.
What made it even better was discovering afterwards that they had apparently cancelled attending the event last minute - meaning they had literally ghosted the entire awards ceremony while winning the “Serial Ghoster” award.
Honestly, if you tried to write that into a script, people would think it was too on-the-nose.
Those unexpected moments are often what make an event memorable, and being able to react to them naturally and confidently is such an important part of live hosting. Sometimes the best laughs of the evening are the moments nobody planned.
Why Companies Are Moving Away From “Standard” Awards Nights
Events like this are becoming increasingly popular because companies want more than a traditional ceremony.
They want people engaged.
They want atmosphere.
They want the event to feel like a celebration rather than an obligation.
That’s why interactive hosting, audience participation, gameshows, and live entertainment are becoming such powerful additions to corporate events across Edinburgh and throughout the UK.
When the hosting is right, the whole evening feels effortless. The transitions are smooth, the audience stays energised, and the event maintains momentum from start to finish.
Looking for a Corporate Event Host or Awards Ceremony Emcee in Edinburgh?
Whether you’re planning a company awards night, gala dinner, staff party, conference, or corporate celebration, having the right host can completely change the atmosphere of the evening.
As a professional magician and event host based in Edinburgh, I work with companies looking to create events that feel polished, modern, and genuinely entertaining - not stiff or overly scripted.
From hosting awards ceremonies and running interactive gameshows to adding live entertainment throughout the night, the goal is always the same: creating an event people genuinely enjoy being part of.
And ideally… ensuring the only thing getting ghosted is the “Serial Ghoster” award winner.
